Cloudmii Adopts Chief Bare Metal Cloud to Assist Taiwanese E-Commerce in Expanding to Vietnam
Filling the Gaps Presented by the Three Major Public Clouds, Significantly Reducing Latency and Investment Costs.
Mr. Kenny Hsu, CEO of Cloudmii
Taiwanese businesses are now accelerating their global expansion. Since the supply chain continues to restructure, Southeast Asian countries have become popular in recent years, and even e-commerce industries are also responding to the New Southbound Policy. Cloudmii, a company with extensive experience in Southeast Asian countries, assisted its five-year cooperative client, eBrook’s Adobe Magento, in successfully building an e-commerce website in Vietnam this year. The key to this success was Chief’s Bare Metal Cloud adoption.
Mr. Kenny Hsu, CEO of Cloudmii mentioned, “Bare Metal Cloud offers a high degree of autonomy while meeting customer budget requirements, making it well-suited for Taiwan’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Especially when expanding overseas, the advantage of local deployment helps optimize user experience, and stay compliant with regulations and reduce risks.”
Investment Cost Savings Exceeding 50%
Established in 2018, Cloudmii positions itself as a ‘cloud broker,’ providing consulting and procurement strategy services to clients for major public clouds. Their collaborative platforms include the top three international public clouds and the top three Chinese public clouds. In Taiwan, Cloudmii maintains a long-term partnership with Chief Cloud eXchange. Due to considerations for backup and redundancy, the majority of their clients adopt a multi-cloud approach, highlighting Cloudmii’s unique expertise across various public cloud providers.
According to Mr. Kenny Hsu, Taiwan is home to many SMEs, and there is a shortage of IT manpower. Maintaining on-premises systems was already challenging, but now, with the shift to the cloud, IT professionals must invest time in relearning. However, businesses want to drive projects faster and more cost-effectively. Cloudmii plays the role of a consultant, assisting IT teams working while learning.
The billing models among public clouds are similar. The most common criteria for decision-making are risk assessment and value considerations, especially when service support and SLA differences are minimal. Customers often seek to obtain services at a lower cost, particularly if they don’t have brand biases.
Chief Bare Metal Cloud (BMC) service provides physical bare metal servers and virtual machines. According to Cloudmii’s evaluation, compared to the public clouds, Chief BMC service can save at least 50% in costs. In fact, the public clouds also offer similar services, but the charge is much higher than the shared mode, resulting in a larger cost difference compared to Chief BMC.
Therefore, if a customer’s primary consideration is budget, Cloudmii believes that Chief’s Bare Metal Cloud is a recommended choice. Additionally, for locations where the three major public clouds have not established data centers, Chief’s Bare Metal Cloud takes priority. Latency is an essential factor, and Chief can deliver Bare Metal Cloud service to customers in more than 60 cities spanning 40 countries around the globe, including South America and the Middle East.
Seamless Experience Ensures a Continuous Stream of Business Opportunities
eBrook specializes in cross-border Magento e-commerce website development and CRM integration. A notable representative case is ACER, and following Adobe’s acquisition of Magento, eBrook was elevated to an Adobe solution partner. In alignment with the government’s New Southbound Policy, eBrook assists clients in expanding to Vietnam to establish e-commerce websites, but they immediately face the challenge of adopting a public cloud.
Three public clouds that eBrook preferred do not have data centers in Vietnam. Clients could only chose the data centers nearby in Indonesia or Singapore, which resulted in network latency ranging from 30ms to 60ms. Overseas data centers are generally connected through submarine cables, which potentially increases the risk of unexpected disconnections. Additionally, Vietnam’s network infrastructure is still in the development stage, with numerous variables. Official policies may also unpredictably block certain foreign IPs. Considering these multiple uncertain factors, choosing the three public clouds inevitably entails high risk.
Chief BMC has PoPs in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. After two weeks of testing, Cloudmii’s overall performance was approved for adoption by eBrook. For example, network latency is less than 10ms. After selecting the PoP in Hanoi, the e-commerce website successfully launched in March of this year.
For e-commerce, user experience is crucial. If users have to wait a few more seconds, they will abandon their purchases. However, by providing a smooth experience, users will spend more time browsing the website, leading to continuous sales growth. During the testing period, although the performance of the three public cloud was acceptable, Chief Bare Metal Cloud can achieve better performance as clients expected while minimizing uncertainties, said Mr. Kenny Hsu.
High Autonomy Equivalent to On-Premises Data Centers
For Cloudmii, the deployment method of Chief BMC is identical to that of public clouds. It can be managed remotely, and the deployment process doesn’t require any special guidance. Additionally, the subsequent scaling methods are also flexible, allowing adjustments as needed, similar to public clouds.
The main difference between public clouds and Chief BMC lies in autonomy. General public clouds come with various limitations, whereas using Chief BMC is akin to using on-premises machines in your own data center. With Chief BMC, you can install, use, and customize as needed, with fewer restrictions and cost advantages—allowing customers to have the best of both worlds.
Taking security settings as an example, when using public clouds, you are limited to predefined port values and cannot modify them due to security considerations. However, these commonly used ports in public clouds are more susceptible to attacks. In contrast, custom configurations are less likely to be exploited by hackers, allowing for streamlined use of security tools and reduced investment.
In other words, from the customer’s perspective, adopting Chief BMC service is more akin to an on-premises data center. Additionally, due to the physical isolation of a Bare Metal server and exclusive access to on-demand servers, customers can enjoy ultra-high cloud computing performance and network security. It provides customers with a greater autonomy without being constrained by the limitations of public clouds.
Mr. Kenny Hsu pointed out that for e-commerce, every minute of downtime translates to revenue loss. While reducing infrastructure investment costs is indeed an incentive, Chief Bare Metal Cloud can be deployed locally, significantly enhancing the user experience and effectively achieving the revenue growth for e-commerce clients.
